Faint White Spots on my Powerbook 17"

I never even knew this was covered. But apparently, it’s a worldwide recall on Powerbooks that have this problem. I’ve been putting up with/ignoring this issue for about two years as the screen got progressively worse. (To this day, slowly, more spots are appearing.)

I guess I’ll try to get it fixed now (free) either in China or in the States. I wonder if that means I’ll get a brand new screen. That would be pretty bad ass.

Windows eXPerience

images.jpgOkay so I re-installed Windows and my mistake last time is that I didn’t immediately install the “Mac Drivers Disk”.  That takes care of the Wireless internet, trackpad, video card drivers, etc.

So everything worked right away.  But damn the system font is terrible, and when you turn on “ClearType” it looks like you’re looking at a screen after you’ve worn your contacts for 17 hours straight.

But it is Windows, and it does work, so I’m happy.

Update:
- If you want Parallels for your new Intel machine, I have it. It’s a simple install, and you do not need two licenses of Windows XP to run Parallels and Boot Camp. Just call Microsoft and tell them your legit activation code, and they’ll give you a another code for whichever you need. Perfectly legal. So now I have Windows XP and Parallels activated.

- Flight Simulator is pretty sweet! I’ll have to limit the time so to not interfere with music.

- Download 30-day trial of Contribute 4 to see how it works.

Pro Troolios on my Macbook Pro

I used about 15 plug-ins on many different tracks. I never saw the error message of death. It feels odd operating this program the way it was intended. No system halts. No overloads. No buffer issues. It just works. And it bounces about 20x faster. My favorite upgrade?

The acoustics in the ‘green’ room are a bit reverbalicious, but I kinda like that. So that’s the practice room.

Screen Test

If you, your colleagues, or friends were wondering about the new Macbook glossy screens and their brightness compared to older PowerBook G4 models, here is a demonstration.

I took the picture with these camera settings and picked this photo (after taking 1/10 sec through 1/1000 sec) because it most accurately represented what the screens looked like in a natural environment. I then sampled the same spot on each screen and finally took a “Gray Scale Slider” brightness measurement in Fireworks 8.

PS – the test page was searching for “freestlyle.com” in Google and had Safari take up the whole screen, shot it in the dark on the Italian tripod at 1/25 f4.5

*Don’t make any sudden turns: better to hit it than try to miss it, not responsible for rollovers. Do not go more that 35 mph as a front tire blow out may be fatal. Remember, potholes will cause the car to nosedive into the asphalt. Do not get rear ended as it will most definitely result in life threatening explosion. For best results, only ride with one passenger at a time, preferably of the same weight as driver and seated in the front passenger side, or the rear middle seat. Always buckle up.

Two Days in TMON, back

Yes, that’s right, we were in the Middle of Nowhere for two days. Overcast, and the sky was scuzzy for pictures. I did take the Italian tripod and use it, but when you have polite Chinese relatives always grabbing your bags and stuff (… Italian tripods, ahem) to lighten your load, it actually hinders the picture taking process. So I just gave up on switching lenses and mounting the tripod.

We ate, slept, then ate, slept, then ate, then watched CSI, then slept. Repeat. Aunt’s house. Whew.

I’m finally back, the fumes are about the same, but we put the fume-eating plants all over the house. The first person than can tell we the name of this plant will win.. nothing really, but it will help me to know the English name. Picture later.

To-do list for the next few days:
- take twice as many showers as necessary just because
- set up the office
- move bed and everything to the new house
- go to Kunming and get the fridge, “wash clothes machine”, and misc
- buy a flat screen HDTV in the KM
- buy some snacky treats for the new house
- organize recent pictures and videos and post
- and most important, make music!
