Use the best connections that are avaialble on both pieces of equipment. I used S-Video for the old TiVo to TV connections, and I use HDMI for HD DirecTivo -> HDTV, since that’s what they offer. avsforum is where A/V geeks geek it out on audio, video, cables, etc.
I use RCA connectors, the other ones are too expensive and don’t really change the picture by much. I’ve done side-by-side tests. Why do they charge so much for the cords, maybe because people pay high prices, anyway bell wire will do the job, but rca will do the job with less noise. I am a big fan of analog.
I notice a difference between the ordinary RCAs and Component cables (which look like RCAs, different color scheme, divide video a different way.) I read the that Component cables are better than S-Video, but I can’t tell a difference between S-Video and Components…
We think our DVD player in Kunming has HDMI, so we are going to test that. If it doesn’t have HDMI, then I’ll look at getting a DVI-to-HDMI and try from the computer.
Actually, Components are good enough, so… I think I’ll stick with those and save myself the heartache.
There is a audible buzz, however, with our current DVD player (Chun Mei says only I can hear it, but make no mistake it’s there.) While running S-Video from G4-to-HDTV there is no buzz.
I guess I just want to see if HDMI actually looks better, it’s worth a shot. In two days we’re going to get the government controlled CCTV installed for $45 USD. That’s all you can get in China. No CNN, etc.
